Advanced Chiropractic & Spine Center: Webster's Technique for Expecting Mothers

At Advanced Chiropractic & Spine Center, we are proud to offer the Webster Technique, a specialized chiropractic approach designed to optimize pelvic function during pregnancy. As the fetus develops in the early months typically the head is up, as time goes on and the head gets larger toward the 3rd trimmest gravity causes the baby to “flop down”.  This is often also referred to as “dropped” and called “the lightning.”  The medical term is “engagement” and these means the baby is in the proper position for a head first normal and healthy birth. Often due to improper alignment and function of the pelvis, there is not enough room for this drop to occur naturally. Using Webster’s Technique, the pelvis can be realigned to make room for this natural process to occur on its own. >span class="Default_Paragraph_Font"> Breech presentation is the number one reason that a Caesarian Section (C-Section) is performed on a pregnant mother, due to complications and risks to the fetus being born if the feet come out first.

History of the Webster Technique

>span class="Default_Paragraph_Font"> & illium subluxations and imbalances in the pelvis, which may lead to complications during pregnancy. Over the years, this technique has gained recognition for its ability to promote better alignment and comfort for expectant mothers.

What is the Webster Technique Used For?

  • Pelvic Alignment for Breech presentations
  • Optimizing pelvic alignment to reduce discomfort during pregnancy.
  • Creating an optimal uterine environment, which may help the baby move into a more favorable position for delivery.
  • Addressing specific sacral and pelvic imbalances that can contribute to lower back pain, sciatica, and other discomforts commonly experienced during pregnancy.

While not a direct method for turning breech babies, the Webster Technique is often used when the baby is in a breech or transverse position. By restoring balance to the pelvis, it can potentially create conditions that allow the baby to reposition naturally.

Do Obgyn doctors & Nurse Midwives know about the Webster Technique?

Chiropractor’s and Obstetricians \ Nurse Midwives work together for the best outcomes of mothers and their babies. Often well educated Obstetricians (Obgyn) physicians will refer to Chiropractors for this technique because it’s safer and more gentle then the alternative which is a forceful repositioning of the fetus by the hands of the Obstetrician called an External Cephalic Version (ECV), commonly just called a “Version.’  ECV at 37 weeks has a success rate of only 60% according to published data, and has

significantly higher risks associated with it since the doctor is pushing and squishing the fetus in the uterus.  Webster’s does not have these same risks since the Chiropractor is not manually contacting the fetus at anytime.

How Well Does the Webster Technique Work?

Research and clinical experiences have shown that the Webster Technique is highly effective in:

  • Reducing discomfort for pregnant women by relieving tension and stress in the pelvis and lower back.
  • Improving pelvic alignment, which can reduce complications during labor and delivery.
  • Helping some babies transition into a head-down position, although individual results may vary.
  • Reducing Sciatica and Lumbar Radicular symptoms in pregnant patients
  • Reducing the likelihood of “back labor” complications and pains

Studies conducted by the ICPA have reported positive outcomes when the technique is administered for all these outcomes.

Is the Webster Technique Safe?

The Webster Technique is considered effective & safe for most pregnant women when performed by a licensed and trained Chiropractor. This method involves no direct contact of the fetus, gentle spinal and pelvic adjustments, with no dangerous or invasive procedures. Our Chiropractors take the utmost care to ensure the safety and comfort of both mother and baby during every treatment visit.

What to Expect During a Session

  • Initial Assessment: Your Chiropractor will assess your pelvic alignment and identify areas of tension or imbalance.
  • Gentle Adjustments: Using precise and gentle techniques, we address specific areas of the pelvis and sacrum.
  • Custom Care Plan: Each treatment is tailored to your unique needs and may include recommendations for home exercises or stretches to enhance the effectiveness of the technique.

Is the Webster Technique painful?
For the vast majority of patients, the Webster Technique is not painful, gentle and non-invasive. Most patients find it relaxing and experience immediate relief from tension in their pelvis or discomfort in their lower back. In cases where the round ligaments are in spasm, these structures can be very tender however and your doctor will explain this phenomena if this is expected. If the back is in spasm, and there is a need to work some muscles, treatment in these muscles areas would feel similar to any massage for the same purposes whether you are pregnant or not pregnant.

When should I start receiving Webster Technique care?
The technique can be used throughout pregnancy. For specific concerns like breech presentation, earlier

intervention may provide better results. The larger the baby \ fetus in the uterus… the less space there is to flip down and get into the engaged position.  If you suspect or have been told that you are in a breech position and that if unchanged a C-Section will be prescheduled, and you would like a natural birth, early intervention is recommended.

How Many Treatment Visits or Sessions Are Needed in a Breech Presentation?

  • Chiropractor will discuss a personalized care plan during your consultation.
  • Webster’s can be used for single gestations (one baby) as well as for twin pregnancies.
  • This procedure has been effective in allowing the natural motion of the baby to occur in as little as one visit, or as many as a dozen depending on the patient and the presentation of the pelvis.
  • The average our office sees for the interference in the pelvis to be removed and allow the natural process of “flop” to occur is four to six visits. Of course this varies highly by patient, anatomy, the number of weeks the mother is presenting at and many other variables.
  • While highly effective for Breech presentations, there are no guarantees this technique will work for all mothers and babies due for example to the unexpected situations and / or conditions like Placenta Previa which is when the placenta attachment is blocking the cervix or uterine opening making the head down position not possible anatomically.
  • Our office staff is unable to over the phone either determine if you are a good candidate or give an estimate of how long your care plan will be.  Only with a meeting with your highly trained Chiropractor in our office can these factors be determined.
